Assessment 2: learner response

Create a new blog post called 'Media Assessment 2 learner response' and complete the following tasks:

1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).
WWW: Solid assessment with clear potential to go higher. I really like you argument for Q4 so now we need to develop exam technique to maximise marks.
EBI: Revise PSB a little. We need to add a little depth to our paragraphs or answers. This may be by presenting an example, evidence, or an alternative perspective. This will open up the top levels of the mark scheme.

2) Read the mark scheme for this assessment carefully. Identify at least one potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment.
Q1) Excellent analysis of the product that is detailed and critically engages with the
nuanced aspects of how media language is used to construct meaning
• Excellent and judicious use of the theoretical framework (media language) to
analyse how meanings are generated
• Consistent highly appropriate use of subject specific terminology throughout.

Q2)Dominate media industries through sheer size and power (conglomerate ownership)
• Maintain control and profit at every stage of chain of production (vertical int.)
• Reduce costs and increase profit
• Identify new audiences and revenue streams (horizontal int.)
• Minimise risk of company losing money or going out of business

Q3) Excellent knowledge and understanding of public service broadcasting and its
impact on media audiences and industries that is consistently supported by highly
appropriate and effective examples.
• Consistent highly appropriate use of subject specific terminology throughout.

Q4)Excellent and accurate understanding of the theoretical framework that is
demonstrated by consistently appropriate and detailed consideration of audience
effects theories.
• Excellent and judicious use of the theoretical framework.
• Excellent application of knowledge and understanding produces a media debate
that is insightful and very well-informed.
• Judgements and conclusions regarding the application of audience effects theory
are perceptive and fully supported with detailed reference to theories and
examples.
• Consistent highly appropriate use of subject specific terminology throughout.

3) On a scale of 1-10 (1 = low, 10 = high), how much revision and preparation did you do for this assessment? You may also want to think here whether you had completed all the original blog tasks from last term before doing the assessment.
7, I did a lot fo revision for this assessment, on all the theories from everything we learnt but I wasn't too sure about PSB so I focused on that less than  I should've.

4) Look at your answer for Question 2. Did you manage to write about three different strategies and three different benefits? It's vital you read the question and follow it exactly.
I didn't, I wrote two because I could't accurately explain what synergy was so I left it out.

5) Look at your answer for Question 3. Did you follow the question guidance and write about both the BBC and commercial broadcasters? What could you have added to this answer to reach a higher mark?
I did write a bout both. To increase my mark I should've had better knowledge on PSB in order to write about it accurately. As well as be more coherent in my writing so gain exam skills.

6) Now look over your mark, teacher comments and the mark scheme for Question 4 - the 20 mark essay question on media effects theory. Write a new paragraph for this question based on the suggested theories/answers in the mark scheme. Make sure it is an extensive, detailed paragraph focused on the question and offering examples from the wider media.
You could argue that Gerbner's cultivation theory is the most accurate in explaining the effects of the media on a person, as it says that after a long period of time it influences our values, ideas and beliefs. However, this would only be a problem if what the person is consuming is damaging such as too many real crime documentaries or horror movies or false news. If this is what's being consumed 24/7 then his theory on mean world syndrome would take place and then it would be considered damaging. Assuming that it would be damaging to all audiences is another way of calling human passive with no mind of their own. The two step process model points out that we don't just take in any information we recieve from anyone but from people we consider "opinion leaders"; this proves that people actively decide what to consume and take in from the media and it all determines on what they've decided on consuming for the long period of time for it to then be damaging.
