Narrative

 1) Give an example from film or television that uses Todorov's narrative structure of equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium.

Steven Universe: The Movie

3) Provide three different examples from film or television of characters that fit Propp's hero character role.

Peter Parker (Spider-Man)
Tanjiro Kamado (Demon Slayer)
Agatha (school for good and evil)

4) Give an example of a binary opposition.

"School for Good and Evil" is an example. it is based on directl antonyms, Evil vs Good

5) What example is provided in the Factsheet for the way narratives can emphasise dominant ideologies and values?

The winner often represents the dominant ideas and values of our
culture. When the policeman captures the criminal in a crime drama–
the ideology of the value of law and order is emphasised.

6) Why do enigma and action codes (Barthes) offer gratifications for audiences?

They provide the emotional high spot. It is usually the most
thrilling, funny or horrific moment in the text. (usually in the climax)

7) Write a one-sentence summary of the four different types of TV narrative:
  • Episodic narrative (the series) Story line resolves within episodes.
  • Overarching narrative (the serial)  a unifying story line that connects multiple episodes or story arcs within a larger framework giving coherence and depth to overall experience.
  • Mixed narrative fiction which employs multiple narrators, often in position of each-other or to illuminate different elements of the plot.
  • Multi-strand overlapping narrative (soap narrative) Involves more than one narrative running parallel involving different characters and locations.
8) How does the Factsheet suggest adverts use narrative?

Including the idea of the problem and resolution is crucial.

2) Complete the activity on page 1 of the Factsheet: find a clip on YouTube of the opening of a new TV drama series (season 1, episode 1). Embed the clip in your blog and write an analysis of the narrative markers that help establish setting, character and plot.

- All 5 characters sitting together in a cafe talking in a group about Monica's (a friend) love life establishes the narrative that they are close friends and probably known each other for years.
- The casual laughing sound tracks after every clever joke gives the audience the idea that the tv show is a comedy and the jokes will be saracastic.
- A woman in a wedding dress running into the cafe right after Ross announced that he wants to be married establishes the narrative of the current episode that her story and his will be important and the main focus.
